I'm planning to buy my first used car from a private seller next month, and I'm trying to put together a comprehensive car buying checklist to avoid getting a lemon. I've researched common issues for the model I'm interested in, a 2017 Honda Civic, but I'm nervous about missing something critical during the test drive and inspection. For experienced buyers, what specific mechanical checks should I perform beyond listening for odd noises? What paperwork is absolutely essential to verify from the seller, and is it worth paying for a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic even if the car seems to run fine? I also want to know how to properly negotiate the price after pointing out any minor flaws I find.
