Full Version: Seeking tips on color, composition, and broken color for Impressionist landscapes

I'm an amateur painter trying to move from realistic still lifes into a more expressive style, and I'm deeply inspired by Impressionism. My attempts, however, end up looking muddy and chaotic rather than capturing that beautiful sense of light and atmosphere. I struggle with the loose brushwork and knowing when a piece is finished. For other artists working in this style, what is your practical approach to color mixing and application to avoid muddiness? How do you plan your composition to suggest form without relying on tight lines, and what techniques do you use to create that vibrant, broken-color effect, especially in landscape work? I'm working with oils but would appreciate advice from any medium.
