I'm a self-taught digital artist focusing on character illustration, and I feel like my progress has stalled. I've been posting my work online for general feedback, but the comments are usually just "nice" or "cool," which isn't helpful for improvement. I'm looking for a structured, constructive art critique that goes beyond basic compliments. Specifically, I want to understand if my anatomy is off in dynamic poses, if my color palettes are effectively creating mood, and if my compositions feel balanced. Are there online communities or forums dedicated to this kind of detailed feedback? What should I include when asking for a critique to get the most useful, actionable advice?
Nice goal. If you want meaningful feedback, try critique-focused spaces rather than general showing-off. Good options include Reddit r/ArtCrit and r/learnart, ConceptArt.org's critique boards, DeviantArt critique groups, and ArtStation challenge threads. Look for posts labeled 'critique' or 'feedback.' If you'd like, tell me your preferred platform (Instagram, ArtStation, etc.) and I can tailor a few groups.
Here's a ready-to-paste critique request you can drop in any of those spaces:

Title: Detailed critique requested for anatomy, dynamic pose, color mood, and composition

What I’m sharing: a character illustration (specs: 3000x4000 px, digital medium)

What I want feedback on: 1) anatomy/gestures in the pose, 2) whether the color palette mood is coming through, 3) balance and focal point of the composition, 4) readability at thumbnail size

What you’ll see: main full-body shot, a close-up on the torso for anatomy, a small swatch board or palette, and a grayscale value study

What I’m hoping for: 3 specific critiques plus 1 concrete suggestion for improvement. If possible, include a brief note on what to change in a single action.

References: I’ve included 3 reference images that capture the vibe I’m aiming for

Timeline: I’d appreciate feedback within a week

Notes: I’m grateful for any thoughtful, actionable feedback and I’ll respond to comments.
Tips to make critiques useful:

- Provide references that show the mood you’re aiming for.
- State constraints (time, tool), so critiques map to your workflow.
- Include a simple rubric you want people to use (Gesture, Anatomy, Proportions, Color, Lighting, Composition, Edge Quality).
- Post progress: a few WIP steps to help responders see evolution.
Critique etiquette:

- Lead with something you like.
- Be specific about the issue and give a concrete suggestion.
- Avoid value judgments like 'you’re bad'—focus on the design choices.
- Thank responders; offer to return feedback to others.
Sample rubric with quick before/after:

- Before: pose reads as stiff; After: you can see weight shift.
- 0-3 scale: 3 = excellent.
- Example note: 'Increase value contrast at focal point to pull eye; adjust shoulder line for balance'
