I've been practicing figure drawing for about a year, mostly from photo references, and I feel like I've hit a plateau. My proportions are decent, but my figures look stiff and lack a sense of weight and dynamic movement. I want to improve my figure drawing techniques to capture gesture and anatomy more fluidly. Should I be focusing more on quick gesture sketches from life, studying skeletal and muscular anatomy in depth, or practicing specific exercises like contour drawing? For artists who have moved past this stage, what practice routine or specific drills helped you the most in making your figures look more alive and less like posed mannequins?
