I've been home recording my band's demo for a few months, and while the raw tracks sound decent, my mixes are coming out muddy and lacking clarity, especially in the low end. I think my main issue is with mixing techniques for balancing the kick drum and bass guitar—they're fighting for space and creating a boomy mess. I've tried EQ and compression, but I can't seem to carve out a pocket for each without making them sound thin. For those who mix rock or indie music, what's your step-by-step approach to getting a tight, defined low end? Do you typically sidechain the bass to the kick, use multiband compression, or rely more on precise EQ cuts? Any tips on specific frequency ranges to focus on would be incredibly helpful.
