I'm a new driver who just got my license, and I want to be as safe as possible on the road, especially with all the distracted drivers I see. I've heard about defensive driving techniques but I'm not entirely sure what that means in practical, everyday situations. For example, how much space should I actually leave between my car and the one in front at highway speeds, and what's the best way to scan intersections for potential hazards? Are there any specific courses or resources you'd recommend that go beyond the basic driver's ed curriculum to really build these skills?
