Full Version: How do F1 teams decide pit stops, engine modes, and fuel during a race?

I'm a new Formula 1 fan who started watching last season, and I'm trying to get a better grasp of the technical side of the sport. I understand the basic concepts of DRS and tire compounds, but I'm confused about how teams make strategic decisions during a race, like when to pit for a tire change under a safety car or how they manage fuel and engine modes. Can anyone explain the key factors that go into these real-time calls, and are there any resources that break down past races to show how different strategies played out?
Nice topic. The real-time calls in a race come down to a few big levers: current track position relative to rivals, tire wear and how fast those compounds are degrading, how much fuel/ERS you have left to deploy, and whether a safety car or VSC is changing the pit-stop math. Watch also for when the DRS zone is open and whether a pit would help you jump someone in that window.
