I'm thinking of starting a small, virtual book club with friends who are scattered across the country, and I'm looking for advice on how to make it engaging and sustainable. We all have busy schedules, so I'm considering a book every two months with a casual video chat discussion, but I'm worried about picking books that will appeal to everyone. How do you handle choosing titles, facilitating discussion without it feeling like a school assignment, and keeping momentum going when life gets busy? Any recommendations for a first book that's thought-provoking but not overly dense would be great too.
Love the concept. To keep it sustainable, start small: a two‑month cycle per book, and use a simple poll to pick the first title (3 options max). Rotate a volunteer host each book so responsibilities don’t fall on one person. Keep it casual: a 60‑minute video chat or a lightweight asynchronous thread for those who can’t join live. A shared calendar or reminder emails help too.
