I'm designing a psychology experiment to test the impact of different types of background noise on concentration during a reading comprehension task. My main concern is controlling for confounding variables; for instance, participants' prior familiarity with the reading material or their inherent anxiety levels could skew results. I'm considering a within-subjects design where everyone experiences each noise condition, but I'm worried about order effects. What are the best practices for counterbalancing the presentation order and what would be a robust, objective way to measure the dependent variable of 'concentration' beyond just a post-test score?
