I want to refresh my living room on a tight budget and am planning some DIY home decor projects, starting with building a large, rustic-style floating shelf unit out of reclaimed wood. I'm comfortable with basic tools, but I'm unsure about the best method to securely mount such a heavy, wide shelf to drywall without hitting studs in the ideal spot. Should I use heavy-duty toggle bolts, or is it worth opening the wall to add proper blocking? I'd also love ideas for other impactful, beginner-friendly projects like stenciling an accent wall or upcycling thrift store furniture.
