I manage a small fleet of ten delivery vans for a local distribution company, and we're struggling with rising fuel costs and unpredictable maintenance schedules that are causing delivery delays. I'm looking into implementing a basic fleet management system to track vehicle location, fuel consumption, and schedule preventative maintenance, but I'm overwhelmed by the options. I need a cost-effective solution that's simple for our drivers to use and gives me clear reports without being overly complex.
Good place to start: a lean pilot with 2–3 vans. Install cheap OBD-II trackers (examples: basic dongle + app) and one simple GPS module to centralize location. Use a free dashboard or a lightweight sheet to log fuel per mile, idling time, and maintenance due dates. Run it for 4 weeks, then compare to your current baselines to see if you’re actually getting cleaner fuel use and fewer delays.
