I'm new to the area and trying to meet people outside of work, so I've been looking for local meetups that aren't centered around drinking. I'm interested in hiking, board games, or casual tech talks, but the big meetup sites seem to have a lot of inactive groups or events that are mostly virtual. How do you all find smaller, in-person gatherings around here, and are there any regular meetups you'd recommend for someone in their late twenties looking to make some friends?
Great goal. Start by hunting in three places: local libraries, community centers, and coffee shops. Then add online cues: Meetup, Facebook Events, Nextdoor, and library calendars. Use search terms like hiking group, board games night, tech talk, or coffee-and-code and include your town. Small, recurring events are the ones that tend to stick.
Practical approach: 1) filter for in-person, monthly cadence, and size you want. 2) reach out to venues with a short pitch and offer to host a no-pressure intro night. 3) attend 1–2 events just to feel the vibe before committing. You’ll learn what works by doing.
Don’t overlook offline signals. Ask staff at the library, park rec programs, or bookstore about existing groups or flyers. Some groups print business cards or postcards—grab one and reach out. A quick chat can reveal a regular game night or morning hike that isn’t visible online.
What city or neighborhood are you in? If you share, I can suggest concrete spots that usually host casual meetups (parks for hikes, coffee shops with board game nights, library clubs).
Clear criteria to judge a group: open participation, a friendly, welcoming tone, a transparent schedule, no heavy pressure to 'perform', reasonable accessibility, and a plan for newbies to get involved without infinite onboarding. If it checks those boxes, you’re likely in a good space.
Two-week challenge: commit to visiting two in-person events in the next couple weeks, and bring one friend. If neither fits, consider starting a small, low-friction meetup yourself (e.g., a monthly coffee + 30-min chat) and invite people via a simple flyer on corkboards and a post on Nextdoor.
