I've finally decided to get in shape, but I'm completely new to fitness and feel intimidated by gyms, so I want to start with home workouts for beginners. My apartment is small and I only have a yoga mat and a set of resistance bands. I'm looking for a simple, follow-along routine that focuses on building foundational strength and doesn't require a huge time commitment or complex equipment. What programs or YouTube channels did you find most helpful when you were just starting out?
20–25 minutes, 3×/week, minimal gear. Start with FitnessBlender’s beginner follow-alongs—clearly explained cues and you can filter for resistance bands.
I started with FitnessBlender and HASfit for beginners. They have solid, low‑injury risk routines you can do with bands in a small space. The step-by-step cues make a big difference.
Simple 4‑week starter with bands:
- Frequency: 3 days/week (Mon/Wed/Fri)
- Structure: 2 sets of 12–15 reps (or 30–60s for each hold)
- Moves: band squat, glute bridge with mini-band, seated row/band row, standing overhead press, Romanian deadlift with bands, plank 20–30s
- Week 1–2: focus on form and range of motion
- Week 3–4: add a third set, add lateral band walks, increase reps to 15–20 or resistance
Warm-up 5–7 min, cool-down 5 min. Space: enough for a mat and bands; progress by stronger band or more reps.
Tips: slow, controlled tempo (2s down, 2s up); avoid locking joints; use a door anchor for rows; if you feel numbness, stop. For structure, MadFit's 15–20 minute beginner band workouts are great.
Channels I love: FitnessBlender, HASfit, MadFit, Blogilates for mat-based routines. If you want a darker, more technical vibe later, Athlean-X has form cues but can be tougher for beginners.
Space and injuries? Tell me any limitations and I tailor suggestions; want a 2-page list of 20-minute routines? Also, would you prefer video long-form or split into short clips?
