I'm finally upgrading my gaming PC to target consistent 4K performance at high refresh rates, and I'm torn between the latest offerings from NVIDIA and AMD, specifically the RTX 4080 Super and the RX 7900 XTX. My priority is future-proofing for upcoming titles with ray tracing enabled, but I'm also concerned about power consumption and driver stability. For enthusiasts who have made this jump recently, what has been your real-world experience with these cards in demanding 4K scenarios, and how significant is the performance difference when using upscaling technologies like DLSS versus FSR?
Just a heads-up: there isn’t an RTX 4080 Super in NVIDIA’s current lineup. If you’re comparing, the real choices are RTX 4080 (16GB) and RX 7900 XTX. In demanding 4K with ray tracing, Nvidia generally edges out thanks to dedicated RT cores and DLSS. The 7900 XTX has more raw raster power and 24GB of VRAM, which helps with texture-heavy titles and future titles. DLSS tends to deliver bigger frame boosts and better image quality on supported games, while FSR 2 is very compatible and FSR 3 adds frame generation in a growing set of titles, though results vary by game.
From a real-world perspective, DLSS 3 can push FPS dramatically in many RT games that support it—often 60% to 100% or more—while FSR 2/3 still provides solid uplift but generally a bit behind DLSS in top titles. If you’re chasing the most consistent RT performance across a wide library, Nvidia’s ecosystem typically wins, but AMD driver updates have improved a lot and the RX 7900 XTX remains a strong competitor on non-RT workloads.
Power and thermals are worth sizing up: the 7900 XTX sits around a 350–360W TDP and the 4080 around 320W, so with good airflow you’ll see similar thermals but longer fan curves on the AMD card in hot scenes. VRAM matters for current-gen textures—7900 XTX’s 24GB helps with future AAA titles, while the 4080’s 16GB can hit limits in memory-heavy scenes or very large texture packs.
Recommendation: if you want peak RT performance and especially good DLSS support, go Nvidia (RTX 4080 or 4090). If you value raw raster performance combined with more VRAM and potentially better price/perf in many non-ray-traced tasks, the RX 7900 XTX is compelling.
