Full Version: How can I reveal a protagonist's hidden flaws to drive the plot?

I'm writing a fantasy novel and my protagonist feels flat, more like a collection of plot functions than a real person with flaws and internal contradictions. I've done the standard worksheets on backstory and motivations, but she still reacts too perfectly to every challenge. For other writers, what specific exercises or questions do you ask to uncover a character's deeper flaws and blind spots, and how do you let those imperfections authentically drive the plot forward instead of just creating obstacles?
Here are a structured, repeatable way to dig up flaws: ask yourself a few core questions for the character and then test them in scene. Questions: What is she most afraid of, and what memory still stings? What lie does she tell herself to stay safe? What is a blind spot that others can exploit? How would she act if she couldn't rely on her strengths? Then write a 'misstep' chapter where that flaw drives the action and its consequences ripple through relationships. Let the misstep reveal a deeper value she’s protecting even if wrong.
Short, practical: do a 5-flaw inventory. Name three flaws, then draft a short scene where each one causes a problem (and a separate moment where the flaw unexpectedly helps). This helps you see when it’s narrative fuel versus a mere hurdle.
What POV are you using? If it’s first-person or tight close third, inner ticks can feel tidy. Might be worth testing a slightly more distant or alternating POV for a scene to reveal blind spots. Do you want a couple of perspective-shifting prompts you can drop into a chapter to expose flaws differently?
Flaws aren’t just obstacles; some 'perfect' traits can be deceptive. The tension often comes from contradictions: she believes X but acts on Y. Let the friction between her stated beliefs and real actions drive the plot, not just block her path.
Three-beat scene focused on a flaw: 1) a problem lands, 2) pride or fear blocks a helpful move, 3) consequences escalate and force a pivot, 4) optionally reveal a hidden strength or revised motive. Use this template to craft a version of the climax for your arc.
Two quick prompts you can reuse in drafts: 1) If your plan fails, what would she blame herself for—and what does that reveal about her care? 2) If a trusted ally betrays her, how does she adapt under pressure? Do a 15-minute sprints to draft responses and compare how the arc shifts.
