I'm an intermediate woodworker with a decently equipped garage shop, and I'm looking for a challenging but achievable furniture project to build as a gift, something like a side table or a small bookshelf with interesting joinery. I want to move beyond simple butt joints and pocket screws to practice techniques like mortise and tenon or dovetails. For those with similar experience, what specific projects helped you advance your skills, and do you have any recommendations for detailed plans or resources that focus on teaching the joinery itself rather than just the assembly steps?
