I drive cross country multiple times per year for work and pleasure, so I need cars that never break down. I've had my share of roadside emergencies and I'm tired of the stress. Right now I drive a 2015 Honda CR-V with 180k miles that's been flawless, but I'm planning to upgrade soon.

I'm looking for cars with best reliability records for long distance driving. I've been reading high reliability car reviews and durability car comparisons, but I want real ownership experiences. What vehicles have you taken on extended road trips without any issues?

I'm particularly interested in cars with proven longevity for highway miles. Comfort is important too, but reliability is my top priority when I'm 500 miles from the nearest major city.
For cars that never break down on long road trips, you really can't beat Toyota and Honda products. My wife drives a 2017 Toyota Highlander that we've taken on multiple cross-country trips, and it's been flawless. Currently at 120k miles with zero issues beyond normal maintenance.

The Toyota Camry is another excellent choice for long-distance driving. I've seen so many of them with 200k+ miles that are still smooth and quiet on the highway. The build quality is such that they don't develop rattles and squeaks even at high mileage.

If you want something with a bit more space, the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are both excellent choices. They're comfortable, efficient, and most importantly, reliable. I've taken both on long trips without any concerns.
As someone who drives for a living, I completely understand your concern about cars that never break down when you're far from home. Based on my experience putting over 500k miles on various vehicles, here are my recommendations for road trip reliability:

1. Toyota Avalon - Basically a luxury Camry, incredibly comfortable and reliable for long distances
2. Honda Accord - The 4-cylinder models from 2008-2012 are particularly good for highway driving
3. Lexus ES350 - All the reliability of a Camry with much better comfort and quietness
4. Toyota Sienna - If you need space for family or gear, these minivans are surprisingly good road trip vehicles

The key is regular maintenance before long trips. I always do a thorough check of tires, brakes, fluids, and belts before any extended travel.
When I managed the delivery fleet, we had several vehicles that were used for long-distance routes, and the ones that held up best were the Toyota Camrys and Honda Accords. They consistently racked up 30k+ miles per year with minimal issues.

For something with more space, the Toyota Sienna was surprisingly good. We used one for parts delivery between cities, and it routinely made 500-mile trips without any problems. The 3.5L V6 in those is very durable.

One vehicle that surprised me with its long-distance reliability was the Hyundai Sonata from around 2011-2014. We had a few in the fleet that were used for sales trips, and they held up well to constant highway driving. They're often cheaper than comparable Camrys or Accords too.
From an engine specialist perspective, the best cars for long road trips are the ones with engines that are happy cruising at highway speeds for hours on end. The Toyota 2GR-FE V6 used in Camrys, Avalons, and Highlanders is perfect for this - smooth, quiet, and efficient at highway speeds.

The Honda J-series V6 engines (J30, J32, J35) are also excellent for long-distance driving. They're smooth, powerful enough for passing and hills, and very reliable with proper maintenance.

For 4-cylinder engines, the Toyota 2AZ-FE and Honda K24 are both good choices. They're efficient and durable, though they can feel a bit strained on steep mountain passes when fully loaded.
This is exactly the information I need! I do a lot of highway driving for work, and reliability is my top concern. My 2002 Accord has been great, but at 235k miles, I'm starting to think about my next vehicle.

The Toyota Avalon sounds interesting. I've always thought of them as old people cars," but if they're that reliable and comfortable for long trips, maybe that's what I should be looking at. Are there certain years of Avalon that are particularly good?

Also, what about the Lexus ES350? I know they're more expensive, but if I can find a higher mileage one in my budget, would it be worth it for the extra comfort and quietness on long drives?
