As a professional driver who's put over 500k miles on multiple vehicles, I'm always looking for cars that won't quit. I'm talking about vehicles that can handle the daily grind without major issues. Right now I'm driving a 2007 Toyota Camry with 427k miles on it, original engine and transmission, just regular maintenance.
The key for me is finding longest lasting vehicles that don't require constant repairs. I've also had great luck with older Ford Crown Victorias - those things are tanks. The police interceptor models especially seem to run forever.
What models have you personally driven past 300k miles? I'm particularly interested in hearing about cars with 200k miles plus that are still going strong with minimal issues.
That's impressive mileage on your Camry! I've seen several of that generation with similar mileage in my shop. The 2AZ-FE engine in those is pretty solid, though some had oil consumption issues in certain years.
In my experience, the cars that won't quit are often the ones with simpler designs. I've got a customer with a 1996 Toyota Corolla that just hit 412k miles. Original engine and transmission, just normal maintenance. He's a delivery driver too, so it's not easy miles.
Another one that surprised me was a 2005 Chevrolet Impala with the 3.8L V6 that came in with 389k miles. The owner was the second owner and had put about 200k of those miles on it himself. Said he'd only done basic maintenance and one transmission service.
When I managed the delivery fleet, we had several Ford E-350 vans with the 5.4L V8 that went well past 300k miles. They weren't glamorous and the interiors showed their age, but the drivetrains held up remarkably well with regular maintenance.
One of our longest lasting vehicles was a 2001 Toyota Sienna minivan that we used for parts delivery. It had 375k miles when we sold it, and the new owner is still driving it daily. The 3.0L V6 in those is practically indestructible.
For personal vehicles, I drove a 1998 Lexus LS400 to 315k miles before selling it. That car was incredibly well built and never had a major repair. The build quality was exceptional - it still felt solid at 300k miles.
From an engine perspective, the longest lasting vehicles often have engines that were overbuilt for their application. The Mercedes OM617 diesel from the 80s is a perfect example - designed for commercial use but put in passenger cars. I've seen several with 500k+ miles.
The Toyota 1UZ-FE V8 from the Lexus LS400 is another engine that seems to run forever. I've rebuilt a few at 300k+ miles, and they were still in decent shape internally. The precision manufacturing really shows in the longevity.
For more modern engines, the Honda J-series V6 (J30, J32, J35) has proven to be very durable. I've seen many Accords and Pilots with these engines well past 250k miles with just routine maintenance.
I'm amazed at these mileage numbers! My 2002 Accord with 235k miles seems like a baby compared to some of these. It's encouraging to know that with proper care, these cars really can last forever.
I've been looking at used Toyota Avalons as my next car because I've heard they're some of the best cars for high mileage. The ones I see for sale often have 150k+ miles but still look and drive well. Are there certain years of Avalon that are particularly good for high mileage car reliability?
Also, what about the Lexus ES300/330? They're basically fancy Camrys, right? Would they have similar longevity with maybe better comfort for all those miles?
In construction, we don't usually keep vehicles past 200k miles because the bodies get beat up so badly, but the drivetrains often have plenty of life left. My current F-250 with 285k miles is the exception - it's been well maintained and shows it.
I had a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 that I drove to 265k miles before the frame rust got too bad. The engine and transmission were still strong when I sold it. That truck saw some serious abuse - loaded with tools, towing trailers, off-road on job sites.
For smaller vehicles, I'm surprised more people don't talk about the Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe. They share the Corolla drivetrain and I've seen several with 300k+ miles that are still daily drivers.
