I just bought my first motorcycle, a used standard bike, and I want to learn basic maintenance to keep it reliable and safe. The owner's manual outlines a schedule, but I'm unsure which tasks are truly essential for a novice to tackle versus what should be left to a mechanic. Specifically, I'm looking at adjusting the chain tension, changing the oil, and checking brake fluid, but I'm nervous about making a mistake. For new riders, what were the first maintenance jobs you learned, and what tools or resources gave you the confidence to do them correctly without risking damage to the bike?
