I'm a recent graphic design graduate preparing my portfolio to apply for junior designer positions, but I'm struggling to objectively evaluate my own work. I have a range of projects from university, but I'm unsure if they demonstrate the right mix of technical skill, creative thinking, and practical application that agencies are looking for. For experienced designers or creative directors, what are the most common weaknesses you see in entry-level portfolios, and what specific elements make a project stand out as a strong portfolio piece?
Strong portfolios usually tell a story: a clear brief, your approach, several iterations, and the final outcome, plus how it performed. Include 3–4 solid case studies and present them as mini narratives with visuals, your tools, and any impact or feedback. Consistency in typography and layout helps too—let the work breathe.
