I'm an admin for a new online forum dedicated to mental health support, and we're in the process of drafting our first set of community guidelines. The challenge is creating rules that foster a safe, supportive environment for vulnerable discussions while also allowing for honest sharing and preventing the space from becoming overly policed or clinical. For moderators of similar sensitive communities, what core principles did you establish in your guidelines, and how do you enforce them with empathy, especially in gray-area situations?
Nice mission. A solid core set of principles to anchor your guidelines: safety first (clear risk assessment and a fast path to help), empathy and non-judgmental listening, respect for privacy and confidentiality, inclusivity and accessibility, and clear boundaries around giving medical or therapeutic advice. Pair that with a crisisResponse flow: identify risk signals, respond in an empathetic but practical way, connect to professional resources, and escalate if there’s imminent danger. Add a tidy, visible list of crisis resources on the guidelines page (region-appropriate) for quick access.
