I'm mixing a four-piece indie rock track in my home studio, and I'm having a hard time getting the drums and bass guitar to sit together properly in the low end without sounding muddy or losing the punch of the kick drum. I've tried EQ and compression, but it still feels like they're fighting for space. For those who mix similar genres, what's your approach to carving out a clear pocket for each element in the low-mid frequency range, and are there any specific processing chains you find essential for a tight, defined rhythm section?
