I just finished restoring a vintage 1970s tube amplifier I found at a flea market, a project that took me the better part of six months working on weekends. It was a huge learning process, from recapping the electronics to refinishing the wooden cabinet. I'm really proud of how it turned out and it sounds amazing, so I wanted to share it here. I'd love to see what other members are working on in their own workshops, whether it's electronics, woodworking, or any other hands-on hobby.
That sounds fantastic—six months of weekend work paid off. Congrats on reviving a classic. Do you have photos or a clip to share? Also, what model is it and what part was the toughest to learn?
Love hearing about hands-on projects like this. I’m juggling a small electronics rehab myself and it’s inspiring to see real progress. If you’re up for it, maybe we start a weekly “show and tell” thread where folks post a quick update and a photo.
Cabinet restoration is its own skill set—what finish did you land on to preserve the vintage patina while protecting the wood? Any tips for avoiding blotch or cracking on old veneer?
A short build log would be killer: before shot, after shot, parts list, and a note on sound quality after the recap. It helps others plan their own restorations and pick parts.
Did you notice a tangible improvement in hum, tone, or stability after the recapping and component work? If you have a short sound clip or sample, I’d love to hear it.
Again, awesome accomplishment. If you’re game, we could turn this into a mini gallery thread where people post 1–2 images of their projects and a sentence or two about what they learned.
