I've been freelancing as a graphic designer for about a year, and I'm struggling to move beyond charging an hourly rate that doesn't reflect the value I bring or the efficiency I've gained. I want to transition to value-based or project-based pricing for branding packages, but I'm unsure how to structure these packages and communicate the price to clients accustomed to hourly billing. For freelancers who have successfully made this shift, how did you determine your project rates, and what was your process for presenting the new pricing model to existing clients without losing them?
Congrats on moving to value-based pricing. Start with 3 clearly defined packages: Branding Essentials (logo, color system, typography, and a basic set of branded templates), Brand Identity System (Essentials plus a comprehensive brand guideline and 2–3 applied assets like letterhead, social templates, and a mini style guide), and Brand Launch/Refresh (full suite plus rollout plan, launch assets, and initial campaigns). Price them by the value they create rather than hours—think in terms of time saved, consistency across channels, and faster go-to-market. Include a fixed number of revisions and clear ownership/licensing terms. rough anchors: Essentials $3k–$6k, Identity $7k–$15k, Launch $18k–$30k. For existing clients, offer a transition plan or grandfathered terms to ease the switch.
