I've been dealing with persistent adult acne for years, and after trying countless over-the-counter products with minimal results, I'm considering seeing a dermatologist for prescription options like retinoids or antibiotics. However, I'm worried about the potential side effects, especially since I have sensitive skin. For others who have gone the prescription route for moderate but stubborn acne, what was your experience with the initial adjustment period, and how did you manage dryness or irritation while waiting for the treatment to become effective?
Do you have a dermatologist? If not, a skin clinic or nurse practitioner who specializes in acne can be helpful. Ask about a 6–8 week check-in, plan for potential side effects, and what to do if you can’t tolerate the chosen product (alternate formulations or pausing). If you want, tell me your skin type and sensitivities and I can sketch a starter plan you could discuss.
