I'm setting up smart lighting throughout my home and want to create automated scenes that mimic natural daylight patterns to help regulate my sleep cycle, but I'm overwhelmed by the options between different ecosystems and protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi. I need a system that's reliable and doesn't require constant app tinkering once it's set up. For those who have integrated smart lighting for wellness purposes, what brands or hubs have you found most reliable for creating complex, time-based automations, and how do you handle the balance between automated scenes and manual override when you just need a bright light to read by?
If you want reliable, low-maintenance automations, lean into Matter/Thread. A Thread border router (like a HomePod mini or an upcoming Thread gateway) lets scenes run locally, so you’re not waiting on the cloud. Pair that with Matter-ready bulbs from Philips Hue, Ikea Tradfri, or Nanoleaf, and keep most of your setup in one ecosystem (HomeKit or a single hub). Then build a few daylight routines—sunrise, daytime, sunset—and let the hub handle transitions without constant tinkering.
