I've been practicing figure drawing from life for about a year, focusing on capturing gesture and proportion, but my drawings still look stiff and lack a convincing sense of weight and three-dimensionality, especially in the torso and pelvis. I think I'm getting caught up in contour lines and not seeing the forms in space. For artists who have moved past this plateau, what specific exercises or mindset shifts helped you internalize anatomy and volume, and how do you approach a quick pose study to prioritize dynamic structure over just accurate outlines?
Think in volumes, not outlines. Do quick 1‑minute gesture sketches using simple shapes: torso as a rounded box or cylinder and the pelvis as a block. Keep a strong line of action and a clear weight shift so the form reads in space even before you detail any muscles.
