My film club is doing a project where each of us has to defend our personal top ten movies of all time, and I'm struggling because my list feels so emotionally driven and inconsistent across genres and eras. I know certain canonical classics belong for their influence, but do they truly resonate with me more than a modern masterpiece that moved me deeply? For others who have attempted this daunting task, what criteria did you ultimately use to weigh personal enjoyment against objective artistic merit and historical significance, and how did you reconcile the inevitable guilt of leaving off a universally praised film for a more personal favorite?
Totally relatable. My top-ten always ends up more about what moves me than what critics praise. I start with the films that still hit me emotionally years later, then see if there’s room for a few 'objective milestones' that broaden the range.
Practical rubric I use when I’m stuck: 1) emotional resonance (does it stick with me after a rewatch?); 2) craft quality (acting, writing, direction); 3) how much it expanded what I think cinema can do; 4) rewatchability and depth across different moods; 5) cultural/historical significance. I weight 3-2-1 maybe, but I adjust per pick.
Process I’d try: draft a rough list of 15-20; rank by gut feeling; then intentionally drop some 'obvious classics' to make space for personal picks; keep 'honorable mentions' to preserve memory of what you value; revisit after a few weeks to see if your taste shifted.
On not including a universally praised film: give yourself permission. Every list is personal, not a universal ranking. If you can articulate why it didn’t fit your current taste or memory, that’s a valid lens; ties to life experience change; the discussion becomes richer.
Question for you: are there constraints (length, must be films only, can TV series count)? Do you want to emphasize a theme or just a genuine cross-section? If you share those, I can draft a clean framework you can present.
