My seven-year-old was recently diagnosed with moderate persistent asthma after a series of nighttime coughing fits and exercise-induced wheezing, and we're starting on a daily controller inhaler along with a rescue inhaler for flare-ups. As a parent, I'm struggling with the practicalities of ensuring he uses the inhaler correctly at school and during activities, and I'm anxious about recognizing when a situation warrants an urgent care visit versus managing it at home. For other parents managing pediatric asthma, what systems or tools have you found most effective for coordinating care with school nurses and coaches, and how did you help your child understand their condition and treatment without making them feel overly anxious or different from their peers?
