I'm in the final stages of buying a used 2019 pickup truck from a private seller, and we've agreed on a price pending a satisfactory pre-purchase inspection. The seller is amenable, but I need to decide whether to take it to a general mechanic I trust or to a dealership service center for the brand. For those who have gone through this, what specific areas or components should I explicitly ask the mechanic to focus on beyond the standard check, given it's a truck that may have been used for light towing or off-road, and how did you handle the conversation with the seller if the inspection revealed unexpected, costly repairs—did you renegotiate the price, ask for them to fix it, or simply walk away?
