I've just been hired as the first dedicated community manager for a growing outdoor apparel brand, and I'm tasked with building an engaged social media community from the ground up, moving beyond just posting product photos. My goal is to foster genuine conversations and user-generated content around our core values of sustainability and adventure. For experienced community managers, what strategies have been most effective for initiating and sustaining meaningful engagement in the comments and DMs, especially on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, and how do you balance the need for brand voice consistency with allowing for authentic, sometimes critical, user conversations without resorting to heavy-handed moderation? I want to build trust, not just a follower count.
