I'm a parent trying to nurture my ten-year-old's budding interest in chemistry, and I want to set up some engaging and genuinely educational home science experiments that go beyond the basic vinegar and baking soda volcano. Safety is my top priority, so I'm looking for projects that use common, non-hazardous household materials but still demonstrate real scientific principles like pH indicators, simple chemical reactions, or basic physics. For other parents or educators, what are your favorite intermediate-level experiments that have successfully captivated kids, and how did you structure the activity to include proper hypothesis testing and observation rather than just creating a cool effect? I want to encourage the scientific method, not just a show.
