I'm a graduate student in psychology designing my first major independent study, and I'm struggling with the experimental design for a project investigating the impact of ambient noise types on sustained attention. My main concern is properly controlling for confounding variables like participant fatigue and prior sleep quality while still creating a realistic simulation of a work environment. For experienced researchers, what are the most effective and practical methods for implementing counterbalancing and control conditions in a within-subjects design like this, and how do you determine the optimal number of trials or conditions to achieve statistical power without causing participant burnout that could invalidate the later data points? I want my methodology to be rigorous enough for publication.
