As a legal aid attorney, I frequently assist clients whose constitutional rights have been implicated during police interactions, but I'm finding a significant gap between the protections outlined in case law and what actually happens on the street. Specifically, I'm seeing consistent issues with unlawful stops and searches where individuals don't feel empowered to assert their rights in the moment. I'm considering developing a simple, clear community workshop to educate people on the practical application of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments during encounters with law enforcement. For other lawyers or educators who have done similar work, what are the most effective methods for translating complex legal principles into actionable knowledge without creating unnecessary fear or confrontation, and what are the key do's and don'ts you emphasize for personal safety while protecting one's rights?
