I'm a high school teacher developing a new elective on contemporary issues, and I want to center the course around practical ethics in society, moving beyond abstract philosophy to real dilemmas students might face. I'm planning modules on digital privacy, algorithmic bias, and the ethics of consumption, but I'm struggling to find accessible, balanced case studies that don't preach a single conclusion. For educators or professionals who facilitate these discussions, what are some effective frameworks or activities for guiding students to articulate their own reasoned positions on complex issues, and how do you create a classroom environment where challenging conversations can happen respectfully without devolving into debates? I want to equip them with critical thinking, not just my opinions.
