I've been painting in a representational style for years but have recently felt drawn to exploring abstraction to express more emotional and intuitive concepts. My initial attempts, however, just feel chaotic and unresolved rather than intentionally composed. I'm struggling with abstract painting techniques, specifically how to create a compelling sense of balance, movement, and depth without relying on recognizable subjects, and I'm unsure about the best approaches for layering acrylics or incorporating mixed media without the whole piece turning into a muddy mess. For artists who work primarily in abstraction, what are your foundational principles for knowing when a piece is finished, and how do you develop a cohesive visual language or series rather than creating one-off experiments that don't speak to each other?
