I'm a home studio musician producing my own indie folk songs, and I'm struggling to get professional-sounding vocal tracks; my recordings always end up sounding either thin and weak or harsh and sibilant, no matter how I position my microphone. I have a decent condenser mic and interface, but my vocal processing chain in my DAW feels like guesswork—I'm using compression, EQ, and a touch of reverb, but it's not translating to a polished, present sound. For other producers working in similar genres, what is your essential vocal processing workflow to achieve clarity and warmth without sounding over-produced? I'm particularly confused about compression settings for dynamic vocals, how to effectively use de-essing, and whether I should be looking into more advanced tools like saturation or subtle doubling to add body and dimension to my voice.
